ROBERT LEVINE

AFTER MALEVICH

5/9/15 - 5/30/15

MAMA is pleased to present After Malevich, Robert Levine’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. In After Malevich, Los Angeles based artist Robert Levine presents a recent series of paintings and collages that utilize pop culture icons and other incongruous images in juxtaposition to/and layered onto the Supremist paintings of Kazimir Malevich.

The language and history of art figure heavily into these humorous, coolly crafted works that reference Pop Art, Russian Constructivism, the criticism of Clement Greenberg, etc. A single Malevich Supremist composition forms the background of each painting or collage, upon which Levine layers his vocabulary of images. This series first began with “Untitled, (After Malevich with Superman)”, 2012. In a moment of inspiration Levine recognized that the automobile depicted on the cover of DC’s Action Comic’s #1 (June 1938), the first ‘Superman’ comic book, seemed to be situated compositionally in a very similar way to the tilted square in the Malevich painting White Square on White, 1918. The word ‘Suprematism’ conjured up the thought of Superman...
